guidance for scheduling volunteers
Arrange volunteer patients for teaching. Ideally this group will fit into the following list of patients to scan. In reality, it may be that there are more pregnant women and not enough gyn, or specific pregnancy ranges are not exact. Also, the list below identifies our goal to group the women by learning content. This is rarely possible. We are grateful for volunteers whenever they can fit into the schedule during the day.
8:30 – 10:00 Gynecologic scanning (2-3 patients minimum. We are looking for normal gyn anatomy and IUD placement )
10:00 – 10:15 Break
10:15 – 12:15 First trimester scanning (3-4 patients minimum. Preferably two 7-10 week pregnancies and two 10-13 week pregnancies)
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch
1:00 – 4:30 Second & Third trimester scanning (6-7 patients minimum. Preferably three or four 2nd trimester pregnancies and two or three 3rd trimester pregnancies)
Some guidance for scheduling volunteer pregnancies:
Each woman will be asked to sign permission for us to scan for educational purposes.
No one should expect to “model” for more than 30 minutes.
Ask 1st trimester patients if they are willing to have us use the transvaginal transducer for best visualization of the early pregnancy and best dating. This is ideal but not required.
Ask 2nd trimester patients if they are willing to have us use the transvaginal transducer to evaluate cervical length. This is ideal but not required.
We will be glad to liberally offer pictures to each volunteer.
Each volunteer will be given a gift certificate to Target for $25 as appreciation for their time.
If anything untoward is identified during the scanning, we will share our information with the patient and be certain that her midwife or physician also be made aware of the finding.
Ultrasound for Midwives is designed specifically for the way that midwives utilize ultrasound. It is designed as a point of care (POC) tool to be used for decision making at the bedside.
